SCX 'Quick Look'
Corvette C6R 'White'
By Shawn Smith
Corvette's coming out of the woodwork!! I'm not sure who turned on the Corvette faucet but we're being flooded
with Bowtie muscle. Just a couple of days ago Harry gave us a quick look at a new Corvette C6R from another manufacturer and
to keep the Corvette parade going we're going take a quick look at one of the more recent SCX versions of the C6R.
Dressed in all white the recreation of the Andy Pilgrims and Ron Fellows Corvette C6R looks great on the track. The
Compuware, Mobile 1 and XM Satellites sponsored car is a real stunner even without overly colorful graphics or complicated
paint schemes.
With HRW having reviewed the SCX Corvette before. I'm not
going to spend a lot of time repeating the mechanical stuff. Harry did a great job covering the basics in his write up and not
much has changed although do not that this white version showed up with the RX-42 motor instead of the 42B Harry showed in
his review. That bummer aside I have zero complaints about the car's looks and it's going to be pretty easy to let the
pictures tell the story here.
Basic details worth mentioning: Lights (as seen above) a plain white driver, wearing his plain white helmet, sits inside of the cabin
fitted with a roll cage and cool vented windows. The side view mirrors are stiff but feel durable and the rear wing is heat
melted in place but also held up great in testing.
Michelin logos adorn the tires... while they might not last forever they look mighty fine while they're there. The
car came with flash free rims and no noticable problems with the tires so a quick sanding of the rear rubber and it was straight
to the track.
Sometimes the best thing you can say about a car is that you don't have a lot to say about the car. What I mean is on
track performance is exactly the way I expected it. Smooth handling, not a ton of flat out speed, but a good running car
that's easy to pilot.
I did place a strip of black electrical tape across the bottom of the chassis to limit some of the rocking action
of the motor pod. The clearance between the rear tires and the body is very tight and without the tape I had a very odd
hesitations in a couple turns but dampening the pod action did the trick and it was nice driving after that.
For those interested in times, keeping in mind that on your tracks individual results may vary, this Corvette bested
the likes of other SCX cars like their Accord WTCC cars (5.938 fastest lap),
the 2004 Mercedes C-Klasse DTM (5.885 fastest lap) but it fell a tenth
or two shy of the recently reviewed 2007 version of the Mercedes DTM
clocking a best lap of 5.793 versus the best time I got with the DTM of 5.646.
Even so... the times of all the cars mentioned means a more than close enough field of cars with any being capable
of winning with the right finger behind the trigger. Add this Corvette to the line up of predictably fun cars and I like
the livery just for being something different than the popular yellow versions made by SCX and others.
