SUPER TIRES!

January 11, 2003

Although these tires have been released for quite awhile, I have been testing and driving on them, and yet have not found the time to post my findings. Finally, I am finding a break in the action and want to inform those who do not already know how these tires really ARE Super!

A while ago, Prospect Park Raceway sent me samples of the latest wheels and tires that Nick of super tires (Steve's Buddy) and Steve, owner of prospect park raceway teamed up together and are producing. Steve is helping Nick with designing and prototype testing the super tire products while Nick is producing the products. Now to be fair, I didn't much care for the wheels at first because I enjoy scale appearance as much as I do performance. Or rather, I won't sacrifice scale appearance just to gain a second or 2 on my lap times. Some will however, it just isn't for me.

But I was VERY interested in the tires. From the photos that were published, they seemed to be very durable and early reports showed very favorable results. So the wheels and tires arrived, and all I can say is NICE WORK.

The tires themselves are what took me by surprise. Durable, strong, VERY round, and smooth. All the tires he sent were perfect, with no air bubbles or signs of bad molding (excess mold flash or pitting). According to their website, they are a different type of silicone rubber, and from what I have seen, these tires are ones that will be around for quite awhile.

The best part about them? They actually work.  They grip the track nicely, and compared to testing against ''standard" silicones, these tires were faster. I did use the wheels included of course, because at that time, no slip on replacement tires were being made. UPDATE...They are stock now, and I can't wait for my next batch! Below shows the new Fly Slip-Ons, I can see that I have a great deal of ordering to do!

The wheels are made of an extremely smooth and durable Delerin plastic. Regardless what they are made of, they were both perfectly round, which is the biggest plus, and easy to install. The wheels are easily dyed any color, and can also be painted.

The wheels simply pressed on to my Scalextric axles, and were a very tight fit. You could use some glue, but as tight as they fit, I didn't see the need for it. And yes, a world of difference was noticed in the lap time department. My Scalextric Porsche lapped a full second faster than it had ever turned. The tires and wheels did smooth the car out some, and cornering was crisp and tight.

Now, perhaps this is only in my testing, but after the tires have been ran for awhile, they seem to grip the track better. I tested these tires on all 3 of our tracks: Carrera, Scalextric Sport, and Artin. On all 3 tracks, these tires hook up very well, and you will see a performance difference on the first lap.

It seems lately, that getting silicones for our cars has been a chore at best. I am glad that these tires and wheels are going to be available, and look forward to adding more. All in all, I have to recommend these tires for those speed-crazed slot car racers who want to squeeze that extra second out their cars.

And really, have to say they are great replacement tires for any of your models. I have word that NASCAR tires are on the way. I can tell you one thing, when they become available, my entire fleet will have new shoes quickly. I like the handling and feel of these tires, and the added grip it provides allows me to squeeze a little more speed form my stock models without adding any magnets or weight.
