New Monogram Limited Edition!
Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe
Sebring 1965

When it comes to Limited Edition models in our hobby, this one is rather significant as it is the first one from Monogram since their return to slot car racing a little over a year ago. It was only a matter of time before Monogram decided to enter the Limited Edition Market and this Cobra Daytona Coupe was an obvious choice.

It arrived here safe and sound from Slot Car World and I was immediately impressed with the box art and style. On the back of the box is small history of the prototype which I feel is important to include. Limited to 6000 pieces, I also found it interesting that the new Revell Model Racing logos are on the box and on the base for the model. Overall I felt that this model was packaged attractively and should please most collectors.

The Monogram line of these models have impressed many in our hobby due to the scale accuracy and overall high quality of the paint and Tampo work, and this model is no exception. All the markings are as clean and crisp as you could ask for with a durable, dirt-free clear-coat sealing them all in place. I did see a few areas on the hood stripe that seemed a little heavier in certain sections, but you really have to look close to spot it.

For those that plan on racing this model, you are also in for a little surprise. Monogram has changed the gearing on this Cobra to the more standard 9 tooth pinion and 27 tooth crown gear configuration. The original models were geared with a 10 to 26 tooth setup that although made it a road rocket in the straights, it left some wanting more crisp and distinct braking and acceleration. I am very pleased to see this change and it proves to me that Monogram did not just bring out this model to collectors only.

Performance is certainly improved on smaller layouts and we had a ball testing it on our new Artin 4 lane road course. Wheels and tires are once again very well done and the tires only needed a small amount of sanding to get them where we like them. If you have not had the pleasure of driving some of these models from Monogram, I highly advise you to do so...and soon. Straight from the box with only a slight braid adjustment, this model drove smoothly and quietly.

Of course this release does have the collector in mind, yet for the price of only $54.00 ($53.90) it seems only natural to have one for the track as well as the shelf. Compared to the prices of some regular cars, I feel is priced very reasonably.  The reader should realize that we are not into the collector side of the hobby and all of our previous Limited or Special Edition models see the race track. The value that it brings to our home racing pales in comparison for what it might be worth years from now.

At the relatively low price, we feel adding this model to your current stable of cars is highly recommended. With previous releases STILL available, this model might be just the thing that starts a whole new series in your racing. Combining the high quality that seems to be a standard for Monogram, along with the collector appeal, should make this Cobra a welcome addition to any enthusiasts collection.
