I painted the chassis flat black then applied some red primer "dusting" to give it a light rusted look.
Time for our driver. Since we are using a flat
tray interior, we like using the Champion driver busts.
Once painted they actually look pretty good to us.
We like using this paint for the driver figures
and for weathering.
This stuff is cheap too. About one dollar a bottle at your local Mart.
Finally to the bodywork. I built the roll cage
inside the car instead of trying to glue one onto the card stock.
You can use any size styrene tubing really. These cars had a WIDE variety of bar
designs to say the least.
I played around with several ideas for the
final paintwork. I actually struggled with this car at the start.
It was coming out too pretty. The more photos I looked at the less I was liking
my paint efforts.
So I just painted over it with primer and flat white. I used both red and gray
primer.
I had some decals...but no, that would not do. I drew the numbers on with a
paint marker.
The rear sponsor was done with a black Parma pen used in RC.
I used the paint shown above to accomplish the
weathering. Not perfect but I think captures the look.
I used a lighter here and there to make some dents and dings.
We like using simple playing cards for our
interior trays.
I just glued the driver and a sanded down steering wheel.
Not the finest detailed model, but I think it captures the spirit of this series.
Engine time. I stuck with the old flathead.
I drilled small holes to mount the exhaust tubing which was scrap styrene.
I also added the front radiator assembly.
I put a few dings in it with my Dremel and I mounted slightly off center.
Finishing work. Added the spring arch bar on
the front of the axle housing for effect.
Plus some screen up front.
And here she is. Not as detailed as some model
but I like it.
It looks road hard and put away wet. Just like they were back then.
This was a lot of fun. It did not take forever to build and it looks the part.
I hope some of you decide to give one a try. Something a little different, but FUN!
